Lady Macbeth "Spot" Maxwell
March 1st 2005
We are saddened to announce the death by natural
causes of Spot, our bookstore cat. She was 70 cat years old. Formally know
as Lady Macbeth, Spot entered the world in the spring of 1995 in a rolled
up wool rug in the studio at the back of our property on Walnut Street.
One of a litter of 5, her mother and one brother and sister soon found
better accommodations, leaving Spot and two of her brothers to reside with
us. Pywackette, our original store cat, had recently exhausted all 9 of
her lives, and it was decided that Spot would take over residence at the
bookstore. (After all, it's not a real bookstore if it doesn't have a cat.)
Her brothers were to remain at Walnut Street in order to keep Chester,
our stray Rotthuahua, company.
Spot ruled her bookstore roost with an iron
claw (although she had none). She amassed a long list of two legged suitors
who would visit her and scarcely cast a glance at the books. She demanded
attention, and had no problem obtaining what she wanted. She oversaw the
expansion, contraction, and eventual closure of the bookstore on Pacific
Avenue. Upon taking up residence at her new digs on Walnut Street, initially
she was none too pleased to be reintroduced to her long separated brothers.
Eventually she became acclimated and left her brothers to rule the unkempt
world beyond the glass while she was Queen of the Interior Domain.
She died peacefully on a rug in the living
room of her Walnut Street address. She was proceeded in death by her brother
Mustard who died tragically in an auto accident in April of 2004. Her brother
Eldridge survives her. Internment will be private.
The Queen is dead. Long live the Queen.
